Those of us who advocate for a world without nuclear weapons are often dismissed as naive and pusillanimous, utopian dreamers unhinged from political reality. You can’t put the nuclear genie back in the bottle, we are told. Our enemies have these weapons, so we must maintain and upgrade ours. Even if we wanted to get rid of the bomb, we cannot and should not. Our survival and security depend on maintaining nuclear deterrence.
